Get your (electric) bicycle ready for summer

Summer is just around the corner! Time to go on some lovely bike rides. Head to the beach or take a trip through the countryside. To make your bike rides as safe as possible this summer, it is wise to give your (electric) bike the necessary maintenance. You can do some of this yourself, but leave other things to a specialist. With these maintenance tips for the summer, you can set off safely and comfortably!

What can you do yourself?

Clean, clean, clean

Whether you have an e-bike or a regular bicycle, always start by cleaning it! Wipe down the frame and wheels. Nowadays, there are also handy cleaners available. Whatever you choose, always dry your bicycle with a clean, dry cloth.

Check your tyres

Simple, but so important. Check that your bicycle tyres do not have any dry cracks. These are often caused by salt in the winter. Also check the tyre pressure, which should be between 3 and 4 bar for a city bike and e-bike. For a cargo bike, 3 - 3.5 bar applies.

Softer tyres can sometimes be better for grip in winter, but they also wear out faster. On an e-bike, this affects the range. In summer, pump up those tyres!

Lubricate

Do you have a bicycle with a chain drive? Then it is wise to lubricate it with an all-round oil. This applies to a closed chain guard, but certainly also to a bicycle with a derailleur. This is because the chain has to endure more dirt.

Does your bicycle have a belt drive? Then lubricating with oil is not necessary. However, it is wise to brush the belt (dry) after winter to remove street dirt. This prevents unnecessary wear and tear.

Lubricate the lock

After winter, your lock may be a little stiff to close and you may find it difficult to turn the key. This can be easily solved with a multi-purpose lubricant. Apply this to the locking ring while your bicycle is locked. Turn the lock with lubricant a few times to open and close it to make it smooth again. This lubricant is also useful for polishing away small rust spots on metal parts. Do this while the spots are still small. This immediately applies a protective layer, which can help prevent larger rust spots.

Check the accessories: bell, lights, saddle and handles

Ring, ring. Can other road users still hear you clearly? Check that your bell is still working properly. Are you still clearly visible and are your lights and reflectors still working? Don't forget to check that the saddle and handles are still securely attached. Did you lower the saddle in winter so you could reach the ground more easily? If so, adjust it back to the correct height for you.
